He's modulating his patch with a 'Talkbox'. My question, where can I find the original 'Roger Patch' and how can I put this onto my MicroKorg XL Cheers, John PS.

THERE ARE 2 PROGRAMMING SHEETS, P.A. AMPLIFIER SETTINGS (WHICH IS USED TO POWER THE TALKBOX) AND INSTURCTIONS ON HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM MADE TALKBOX ALL FOR A VERY AFFORDABLE PRICE. EVER WANTED TO SOUND LIKE OR SIMILAR TO ROGER TROUTMAN.

I've made my own 'Talkbox' from a commercially bought micro guitar amp ( £17 sterling in the UK ) which runs from a 9v battery. Pretty good results for so little cash and an hours work evilsweetiepie Joined: 18 Apr 2012 Posts: 17 Posted: Tue Sep 10, 2013 7:37 pm Post subject: With a synth talkbox patch, all it usually is at base is sawtooth or pulse waveform, something with sharp harmonics.

Do NOT go on ebay and look for a talkbox patch sheet to buy, it's a total ripoff. Just tweek with the said waveforms on your synth until you get it how you like it. Just tweek with the said waveforms on your synth until you get it how you like it. Hi evilsweetiepie, Thanks for your help and advice, it's much appreciated. I have tried tweaking various waveforms with some success but thought there was an original waveform created by 'Roger' which may give better results. I'll therefore seek out nice harmonic rich sawtooths and manipulate them to suit my needs. Many thanks once more. He mostly is known to have used a Yamaha DX100, which is an FM synth, very different than the Microkorg. But still, no difference, you can easily do it with any other synth. Brilliant evilsweetiepie, I've googled Roger Troutman (RIP), he certainly was the founder of the talkbox sound. Digitech Rp-1 Owners Manual. He died so young, so sad for the music scene, but his sound can be re-created any time thankfully Cheers John Display posts from previous: ->All times are GMT Page 1 of 1 Jump to: You cannot post new topics in this forum You cannot reply to topics in this forum You cannot edit your posts in this forum You cannot delete your posts in this forum You cannot vote in polls in this forum.

Yep, I got you man. I don't have any DX100 talkbox patches, but I do have some DX21 talkbox patches that I converted to DX100 format for you with TXConvert.

The DX21 and DX100 are similar enough that it should be the same, but the patch memory is less so it's split into two files. If you have any problems with these, let me know and we'll figure it out. Use MIDI-Ox or SysEx Librarian to transfer these to your DX100. Dump your current patches first in case there's something on there you want to save from the previous owner.

I'm currently looking to expand my patch bank collection and I'm putting up a web site soon which will facilitate easy sharing of FM patch banks. Let me know if you find considerably more than what I've shared with you here for your DX100. Also be aware that the DX27 and DX100 are the same thing internally, and patches for either work in both.

Can you believe that people try to sell these patches on ebay? It's just 4 kilobytes of parameter data. The worst part is that there's a market for it because there aren't any good places for patches online, so people buy them. I'm pretty sure the ones I have are the same being sold on ebay. The name of the first patch matches, and the others all have names of patches that I read about as being good for talkboxes. One of them is called FMSAWTOOTH, and another is LEADSYNTH, both of which I saw mentioned multiple times on old Yamaha and talkbox forums. These were freely distributed on the internet in the 90s.

At least one of them is a Yamaha preset from one of the DX's. It really gets my goat. What talkbox are you going to use with your DX100?

Have you already tried using the talkbox with any other synths? I looked up some info to find out that the DX100 is very popular for talkbox players. I didn't realize just how widespread it was until after you asked for these patches. I would have never thought to use a DX for this.

Just so you know, any of the DX's will work equally well for this purpose, so if you ever need another DX, say something happens to your DX100 or you just want another for whatever reason, just know that it doesn't have to be a DX100. The DX100 is just smaller and more manageable.

It's also the most expensive DX. I love FM synths and every day I find a new use for them that I didn't know existed. I found out recently that they're also popular for Tubas in Mexican music, and popular for Balkan folk music.

Hey snaxe I know! The people trying to sell patches, I'm guessing maybe they don't have a job and really need the $20 right?! I guess they haven't heard of the great place called Reddit where people share.

I done a massive amount of research on talk boxes and I wanted one that would perform well on stage as some cheaper ones are for bedroom musos. I have a Roctron Banshee 2 Talkbox and its very powerful. As for the different synths I tried things like Juno 6, korgs, and others but I am looking for the genuine Roger Troutman sound and it looks like the Yamaha DX series is the only one that can do this. I have heard others like the Micro Korg etc and they do sound good but not the same.

Roger Troutman used Yamaha DX series after his original synth died and was impossible to replace. I decided the DX100 was best bet as I've seen you tube clips that are pretty much exactly the same as Roger. He did have a custom built talk box though. Also as I'm a guitarist I didn't want to be carrying around a huge keyboard to gigs on top of all my guitar gear so the DX100 seems perfect for what I need.

Like you said the DX100 is just smaller and more manageable. This dude here can use a talk box pretty well: There's a tonne of Roger Troutman youtube clips as well, check out the one of him doing an interview and you will see his old synth before he swapped to Yamaha DX series.

Other clips I seen him using a DX7. Yeah I didn't know there were different chips within the same model or generation of the DX's, but I'm not surprised that someone noticed it. FM synthesis draws a dedicated crowd. If you ever want to know more about the 4 operator Yamahas, check out.

There are other non-DX keyboards with other old FM chips in them that people obsess over as well. There's a range of PSR and PSS keyboards made by Yamaha in the late 80s or early 90s that have Yamaha YM3812 (OPL2) chips in them, which is the same that went into the Adlib and first Sound Blaster sound cards. I have one of those. They're simple but fun.
