OMG that Matt Coleridge mix is so hot right now! So many ace ace ace tracks and I know almost none of them! It's so fuckin' consistently great it's kinda hypnotic, like you reach this weird plateau where it's just not possible that tracky electro-house could ever be anything less than awesome and so awesomeness becomes the status quo.

I'm not hearing Villalobos so much (except in the slightly trippy, dense feel to it) - it's more Get Physical on poppers, with the slightest dash of Areal. ―, Monday, 17 January 2005 08:46 (twelve years ago). It starts off kind of minimal tech-housey, goes a bit glitchy, has some acid parts, etc.: Here is a mix of minimal techno/tech-house featuring mostly artists that have played at our monthly techno club night (Broadcast), and some stuff by local San Diego producers, like Geoff White, Stewart Walker, John Tejada, Ripoff Artist, and more. It's the first of a two part series. The second mix (frontroom) will be more bangin/funky stuff, from artists like Adam Jay, T-1000, Acid Circus, Brian Kage, Ryski, DJ Bone, Tim Xavier, etc etc. ―, Monday, 30 May 2005 05:14 (twelve years ago). What a weird tune, all those oddly timed loops tripping over each other. I have been playing the hell out of it. I found out recently that it's also in m.a.n.d.y's body language mix (which is unbelievably good and which i have also been playing the hell out of).i think that it is strange how popular the dub kult remix is because as jeffrey said, it's, well, a strange tune. I like when a tune like that crosses over into the popular consciousness (popular being relative here i guess). It messes with people's heads. All of the mixes just posted here look excellent.i need to do a new one and post it, but i have been traveling. I love that villalobos auch remix.

The thing with doing mixes in Ableton.you go back a week later and realize, hmmm, you really did like the first track that you cut out last time you worked on the session. And you *can* just output a revised mix, so why not? So.my tracklisting now starts with Pantha Du Prince: Suzan and proceeds from there. The file is updated, the link is the same. Jena, I've been rocking New Identities all week.

Brilliant stuff! I'm unfamiliar with Bruchstuecke but *really* like both of the tracks you included from that label. Here's hoping the label will find it's way into the Kompakt-MP3 store soon. ―, Sunday, 10 July 2005 17:13 (twelve years ago).

Did you use the Ableton 5 beta for that? Yes, the revised version is almost the same mix, I just opened up the original Live session, unmuted the intro track, made a few adjustments to the compressor/limiter on the master channel and re-exported.

The other mixes linked off of my site are done using turntables only though. The tempo-matching aspect of mixing in Live is a no brainer, which is fun because it gives you more freedom to just focus on layering things, editing the tracks as needed and working with the effects. I'm going to try to pull off my first laptop-based DJ set next month; hopefully I won't have to dodge any beer bottles.

It's all a bunch of really anthemic techno tunes, pretty much the polar opposite of what is currently hot in techno land. Around 01/02 (when 'Jaguar' and 'Diabla' were big) I could have sworn that this style would be the next big thing but it kind of fizzled, and electroclash kind of stole a bit of it's thunder. I really like all these tunes, but I normally wouldn't put them ALL in one mix, but instead sprinkle them in here or there. I did this mix to give to people who are normally into big-room trance and progressive etc, to try and sneak a booking and suject them to 'proper' techno. It hurt me but I refrained from putting any Detroit tracks on here. Also, as a change, I tried to keep the mixing really simple and unobtrousive. Here's a friendly microhouse-ish mix I made over Christmas.

I really like it, but it's YSI so first come first serve. I figure maybe there's someone here who just woke up from a coma or something. Me and a guy i make music with were commissioned to do this mix by a fashion label that his girlfriend works. The guy who was in charge of the project has pretty cheesey taste. He said he wanted 80s/rock song w/ hip hop acapellas type thing. We had decided not to use our names because it's not representative of what we usually do, but it ended up being 'ok'. For what it is. 18 songs in 28 minutes.

Open track one that you want to use.

You'll get the beatmapper wizard thing. Use zoom to find the downbeat / first beat - don't trust what it guesses for you - use the + to zoom in. Then next, it'll guess a bar (it assumes all music is 4/4) fix it, use zoom to double check, then next then go through the whole thing to make sure it doesn't drop out hideously at any point. (this can be fixed later) then finish - do the same for any tracks you want to mix it with. Use the pen /pencil tool to draw the track out.

Where you fancy the 2nd track to come in, draw the second one on. Zoom in to adjust, jiggle around and that should do it. It's easier than the above - just too many words for the clicks of a mouse. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 14:40 (eleven years ago). Chop things up, sometimes ridiculously so. And not have to get fingerprints over vinyl. I'd never use acid live - far too unpredictable, tho i did use v1 and v2 live at optimo many years ago.

I'd fiddle with things as it played. (and subsequently hope the pc didn't crash). I've yet to play with ableton 5 and tracktion looks like some wacky cross between fl studio and acid and doesn't like my external sound machine, so it was uninstalled.

Most ableton things i've heard sounded like a twitch wannabe (sorry stir) - whereas you can do allsorts in ableton, you can physically chop up the waveform onscreen and re-arrange it in acid 9and i daresay any similar program)( i re-jigged sxpress' hey music lover so that it played a slightly different tune for the xfm thing i did or you can go to extremes of chopping out every nth note and re-joining it to interesting results - turning 4/4 into 3/4 or 7/8 and what have you. Takes bloody ages tho) ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:03 (eleven years ago). I don't know, my primitive answer though would be (a) it doesn't feel as nice and (b) people aren't fully confident in the sound quality. And maybe (c) ableton mixes just sound different or a possible (d) the temptation to blend tunes together seamlessly in the awful Sasha Involver way is very strong when using Ableton, who's going to use it and go 'ok I mixed these two records now I stop'. Of course this is where the argument gets weird cos it's almost like I'm arguing that the limitations of human mixing on decks are a positive thing when they limit those of us that are not creative enough and would use the limitless possibilites of Ableton in a limited way! Myself included but that's why I've not got Ableton yet, I don't believe I can produce! (not yet anyhow) Some of the above are reasons and some are just my reservations, of course!

X-post it's meant to be good for re-edits though, which seems a slightly more universal use and one I'd be into. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:08 (eleven years ago). Yeh, I use Acid/Soundforge exclusively, mostly because it never started as 'wow I wanna be a DJ', more 'I want to make tapes for my mates without gaps in them and loads of cheeky segues and stuff'. I'd love to learn vinyl mixing but that would mean buying decks and then shelling out for vinyl, of which I currently own little. Much easier to rip from CD or download the tracks and have fun mulching them all together.

For me anyway. I guess it's a completely different art, especially seeing as Acid isn't realtime or anything. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:13 (eleven years ago).

I've never used soundforge so i don't know but the main advantage with using ableton is probably that you can fix timing errors. A lot of the things i play have live drums which don't stay in time and are VERY hard to mix so i'll start by fixing all them so they are rigidly in time.

Then i'll record the track into the sequencer side and start cutting and pasting sections, adding effects, re eq'ing and sometimes replace the kik drum or add an additional one. But i guess it comes down to what you are familiar with. I know ableton inside out so that's all i use now. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:24 (eleven years ago). Obligatory Ableton horror story. I've been using Ableton in live settings, mainly for short sets, for about eight months.

Recently I landed a couple of weekly residencies, one of which is geared towards more eclectic music programming. I decided to try Ableton for a full five hour night last Friday with disastrous results. About an hour into it, the program started randomly dropping out the sound. The dropouts ranged from microsecond glitches to 1 or 2 seconds of dead silence. Really embarrassing. I bought Serato the next day, played at the club that night and had zero problems. Ableton has been relegated to the studio computer only.

I can speak from personal experience when I say that there's definitely a different energy with Ableton mixing in a live setting. The best way I can describe it is that the crowd >DJ feedback loop feels mediated by the computer.

I don't get that feeling with Serato or Final Scratch though. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:25 (eleven years ago). The dropouts ranged from microsecond glitches to 1 or 2 seconds of dead silence. That sounds like you need more ram. Thankfully this has only happened to me once in recent memory and that was the other week in texas where there was so much bass vibration in the booth that my powerbook started freaking out. Thankfully they were a very forgiving crowd.

There is a different energy from using ableton in a live setting which is why i use vinyl too but i think once you know your way round the software you learn little ways to make it sound, um, er, more jacking i guess is the best way to describe it. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:32 (eleven years ago). Ableton uses a thing called warp marking where the audio file is kind of fluid.

You literally drag and move the beats one at a time until they are lined up with the grid of a rigidly in time 4/4 beat. I usually have a basic 4/4 beat playing along to check i have got it totally right audibly as well as visually. Ableton 5 has a function that does this automatically but i find it a bit hit or miss and prefer to do it manually. I should point out that it is incredibly tedious to do but worth it for the results.

―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:39 (eleven years ago). I spent the last year learning how to mix 'the old fashioned way' with two records and a crossfader, andi'm quite the luddite when it comes to software. But all this shit sounds really interesting and is making me think i need to get on board.

Most of the guys i know around here do entire sets in traktor. I tried it a few times but couldn't get used to 'seeing' a track to cue it up as opposed to 'hearing' it. Abelton has hardware that you can do this with, right?

Stir- when you were talking about 'fixing' a track and replacing beats. Is this what i'm hearing during 'kiss me again' on that mix of yours up at ourdisco? The way a dance beat lines up with it for 8 or 16 bars and then drops out.

Is that something you 'fix' ahead of time, and not drop in live? Also- is that the hallelujah edit that was on beatsinspace over the summer?

―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:54 (eleven years ago). Most of the guys i know around here do entire sets in traktor. I tried it a few times but couldn't get used to 'seeing' a track to cue it up as opposed to 'hearing' it.

Abelton has hardware that you can do this with, right? You can listen ahead with traktor as easily as you can with vinyl. It works on the same principles except with the added luxury that you can skip back and forth to preset markers on the track. Only problem with traktor, which has stopped me ever playing out with it (they only way I could play out as I can't beatmatch with vinyl and I'm shit with ableton), is that there is a kind of snooty, elitist response to it because it's so simple to use. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:58 (eleven years ago). Other than that it seems to be really unreliable. Rubbish, it's the most reliable software i've ever used.

I would have added that on top live. I never pre prepare actual mixes. I meant i 'fixed' it so it stayed rigidly in time and when i say replacing beats, i more mean putting an additional kik or some sub bass on it so it 'kicks' a bit more than the original.

As i play a lot of old records and new records, i have to do this as the production on the old records is so different that alongside the new ones they would sound a little weak over a soundsytem. Also- is that the hallelujah edit that was on beatsinspace over the summer? I'm not sure but very possibly. Jeffrey, i played in austin two weeks ago.

―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:08 (eleven years ago). This thread is really interesting. I've just got one quick question: for all the DJs out there who use laptops for live DJing, which program do you rate as the best? I currently use Mixmeister 6 Pro and find it perfect for my needs - I prefer to see the waveform and meddle about with it - but Ableton is mentioned by everyone. Am I likely to find Ableton much better for live DJing? The only annoyances with MM6 are that you can't change the pitch and can't do that nifty 'unplug the record deck and let the record slow to a halt' trick.

I use Acid and Cool Edit to make remixes and re-edits. And Dog Latin and Grady, yeah you need an external soundcard. Plug that into your mixer via the USB port, then use the internal soundcard (headphone socket) to listen to mixing ahead, as your monitor. (xpost) ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:57 (eleven years ago). Actually you don't need an external or 2nd soundcard at all. As frenchbloke says you can prelisten (cue) tracks using headphones plugged into the rear outputs of a 5.1 compatible soundcard.

Because of latency issues you are going to need to find, install and configure ASIO drivers compatible with your card. It's a bit of a chore but doesn't require a computer science degree. I think Ableton and Traktor are becoming the default standards for digital performance mixing. From my experience Ableton requires more time to learn and also you need to spend significant time prior to a set putting warp markers into your tracks.

With Traktor you can jump into mixing mp3s immediately if you have an previous experience with turntables. I think Ableton offers a more possibilities for making interesting complex mixes HOWEVER I hear Traktor 3.0 added a lot of effects and gadgets so it might be getting up there too. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:32 (eleven years ago). To be honest, I think paying the big $$ for vinyl imposes a kind of discipline on you that can be a good thing. If I was using (aka STEALING) mp3's i'd be heavily tempted to do tons of flavor-of-the-week mixes that sound just like everybody else's, but since I can only really get 10-15 new records a month, each one I get has to kind of fit in with my existing collection. This is kind of limiting and frustrating at times, but it also means that I have kind of developed a sort of personal 'sound', and when I buy records it's always with an ear towards how they can be bent into line with my other stuff. That makes kind of a good eclectic-not-eclectic duality to my collection.

This also could be heavy heavy heavy rationalization for all the $$$ I've spent on the damn black things. ―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:01 (eleven years ago). I'm going to have to disagree with you here. First, you're making the assumption that everyone DJing digitally is downloading their tunes from the P2P networks.

Not to sound all high and mighty, but some of us do try to take the high road and support the artists we're playing, either by using any of the dozens of legal download sites like Beatport or by encoding vinyl and CDs for playing out and making mixes. Distribution has always been a major concern with dance music, and the legal download phenomenon has begun to solve this while simultaneously leveling the playing field quite a bit, especially for people (like me) who live in towns with crappy record stores. Sure, I could order vinyl off the internet but what's the point if I can get the same tune as a download and avoid the shipping costs, long wait, etc?

―, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:24 (eleven years ago). That's ableton installed and configured - i might be asking questions if i get stuck at any point. The we are back mix - re-uploaded as for some reason only 2/3rds of it would download. Now up in it's full 100 meg glory, if oyu can call it that.

This is a mix i did as a promo thing for my night. A sonic flyer, sorta. Our night gets a lot of sorta trendy types and this is what they seem to like to hear around here. I do feel a little confined by this style sometimes, as i also like to play a lot of more straight up disco stuff, but unless there's a bunch of 28+ people out, it rarely seems to go over. I've never had any problem enjoying playing to the crowd though, especially since i love all of these songs anyway. Don't know what the common thread here is other than that they're all fun songs. Hope you like.
